Provincial Debate

Each year, ADSA holds its annual Provincial Debate Championships during the 2nd week of March. The site of the Provincials alternates between North and South venues every 2nd year.

Some of the previous Debate Provincial Sites have been:

The Debate Provincials also have an AGM (Annual General Meeting) during Round #2 where coaches meet to discuss common concerns and select the Special Awards.

Qualifying for the Debate Provincials

ADVANCEMENT TO PROVINCIALS FROM REGIONALS (2009):

Any team qualifying for Provincials from Regionals qualifies as a TEAM - thus, if one of the 2 partners is unable to advance, the TEAM does not advance and we select the next complete TEAM on the list of qualifiers in that region.

William Aberhart has 38 rooms for the Debate Provincials. We will use 2 for Jr. Bilinguals (4 Teams) and 3 for Sr. Bilinguals (6 Teams). That will leave 33 rooms (66 Teams) to be divided between the 4 categories: Jr. Beginner, Jr. Open, Sr. Beginner and Sr. Open.

The number of debaters advancing to the provincials is determined by the ADSA Office using the following criteria:
a) Provincial category size depends on the size of Regional competitions and the availability of rooms at the Provincial venue.
b) The number of individuals advancing from a region is based upon how large that regional category is compared to the total entered in that category across the province.

Based on these criteria, if 25 out of a total 100 Jr. debaters come from a region then that region would advance about 25% of the Jr. debaters allowed to compete at the Provincials, say 4 out of 16 or 3 out of 12.

1st thing we do is calculate how many teams in each category:
In Jr. High Beginner, we have 29 teams out of 148 we form a ratio;
                                     29 / 148 = X /66
                                                X = 12.9
We do the same for Jr. High Open – 34 / 148 = 15.1.
Senior High Beginner – 38 / 148 = 16.9
Senior High Open – 47 / 148 = 20.9.

2nd thing we do is get rid of the odd numbers because we do not want any byes (Debaters do not like byes, they came to debate!).

Using some sort of arbitrary logic (ie. Which category is the closest to the next even number! & which category needs the greatest number):

Jr. Beginner becomes 12, Jr. Open becomes 14, Sr. Beginner becomes 18 and Sr. Open becomes  22.

Now use the same ratio as above to calculate the number advancing in each category.

2009 Debate Provincials

March 13, 2009

The host school for this tournament will be Strathcona-Tweedsmuir - RR 2 Okotoks, Alberta T1S 1A2

Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School (STS) is a private school in Okotoks, Alberta, just outside of Calgary. It has students in grades 1 to 12. Its grade 12 provincial exam scores are consistently some of the most highly ranked in the province, along with Old Scona of Edmonton[1]. Strathcona-Tweedsmuir also ranks high in the IB system, as well as the annual Fraser Institute surveys[1]. Strathcona is also an active participator in the CESI (Canadian Educational Standards Institute) program, and often volunteers teachers for inter-school evaluatory interaction. STS is also a member of Round Square and CAIS (Canadian Association of Independent Schools).

The school opened in September 1971 as the result of the amalgamation of two of Calgary’s oldest independent schools - Strathcona School for Boys (founded 1929) and Tweedsmuir: An Academic School for Girls (founded 1959). St. Hilda’s School preceded Tweedsmuir School for Girls (1905-1949).[2] Strathcona Tweedsmuir School is also known as STS.

Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School prides itself on its adventurous OE program. STS offers OE15 as an accredited Alberta learning course in Grade 10.

STS provides laptops to students from Grades 6 to 12. STS also utilizes Smart Boards.

STS is the only full Round Square member school in the Prairie Provinces of Canada.

Directions to STS
From Calgary:
Follow Macleod Trail (Hwy 2) south to the De Winton exit and the Calgary Polo Club sign (look for the teepee on your right-hand side). Turn right at the crest of the hill (Highway 552) and travel for 9.5 km. Turn left at 306 Avenue and follow this road down to the School.

From Deerfoot Trail:
Follow Deerfoot Trail (turns into Highway 2) until you see the Dunbow Road sign and take this exit. You'll now be travelling west until you reach Highway 2A (the major highway). Cross both lanes of the highway and stay on this road for 1 km until you reach 16 Street. Turn right (north). Go 1.5 km to Highway 552 and turn left (west). Stay on this road for 9 km and turn left (east) on 306 Avenue and follow this road down to the School.
